One of the biggest mistakes in website creation is making it look great with nice graphics and not actually doing any seo. It is then an afterthought to go back and try and make it search engine friendly which is common mistake made by website design companies.

The seo basics are very simple and do not take a lot to achieve for example every page should have a unique title tag and not use the same one as all the others.

The pages on a website should be name correctly so that they match the theme or have the keyword in them. It is amazing at how many websites actually use just a number as the name of the page.  Those websites that do this and rank well have normally been around for a long time .

The theme of your website should be based around a specific niche and not full of random information.  If Google sees a site that contains information based around a certain topic then it will rank the website a lot higher as it assumes that it is an authoritative website.

One of the basic elements involved in seo is to rank highly for a certain keyword and this keyword should appear in the title, description and approximately 2-5% of the webpage.  Make sure that you do not use any black hat methods like keyword stuffing as Google will see this and place you in its sand box where you will get very little traffic.

If you have a website and its not been optimized for seo it is not the end of the world. You can go through and make changes so it becomes optimized for the maximum seo and ultimately starts to see high volumes of niche targeted traffic.
